Leonard Yook Lim Wong was born on 9 February 1908 in Wong Sha Tau village, Zengcheng county, Guangdong, China. He arrived in Wellington in 1920 at the age of twelve and later became a fruiterer and orchardist in Blenheim.

Arrival in New Zealand

Leonard arrived in Wellington at 4:25 p.m. on Tuesday, 17 February 1920, aboard the Moeraki.

His Poll Tax Certificate, numbered 1012, was issued on 18 February 1920.

Family

Leonard’s wife was Gore Lowe Cheung.

Her Chinese name was recorded as 張哥劉. She was born in 塘尾村 Tong Mei, Zengcheng, Guangdong, but her ancestral village is not known.

Working life

From 1920 to 1925, Leonard worked as a hawker in Wellington with his father, Wong Wah Fai.

During the 1920s and 1930s, he was employed at the Wong She Fruit Shop in Wellington.

In 1935, he entered into partnership with Ng Ting Fong, operating an orchard and fruit shop in Blenheim.

From the 1940s until 1985, Leonard operated L. Wong & Co Fruit Shop at 85 Market Street, Blenheim.
